It Became Time to Move
Ten years ago after successful, high-pressure careers, we chose to make a change. This was not an about-face, but a gradual shift to making better, healthier and more conscious choices. It started with one decision and was followed by another and yet another, until now, when the majority of our daily choices are made to support and further a happier and healthier lifestyle.
A big decision was to leave California and move to New Mexico. This choice became an easy one – after one-too-many traffic congested commutes, one-too-many blaring sirens in the night, and one-too-many earthquakes in a densely populated suburban area. We wanted more space and quiet and a slower pace.
Another decision was to eat organic foods as much as possible. Then we gave up caffeine. We began gently detoxing at the cellular level with botanicals and significantly reduced our carbohydrate (sugar) intake. Next came changes in the way we prepare and cook our meals; as well as the cleaning and personal care products we use.
As you might imagine, the healthier lifestyle journey involves taking some small steps and some big ones. Each one decided upon and entered into with intention and thoughtful visioning.
While our dream is certainly not for everyone, we hope you will define, visualize and pursue your own dream. In doing so, you can live a healthier lifestyle in mind, body, and spirit. By following this kind of an approach, you actually shift from being reactive to becoming increasingly proactive. It is not only more satisfying, but it is also much more freeing.
“The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn; the bird waits in the egg; and in the highest vision of the soul, a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of reality.”
Experts have noted that individuals can easily tell you what they don’t want in life. But that most people have a much more difficult time articulating what they do want.
So we encourage you to spend time dreaming about what your ideal life would look like. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are. If you’re here, you are able to make changes.
Then envision how you could make it come about. What would it entail, what changes would you need to make? Instead of just not wanting to be sick or stressed, broke, confused or unfulfilled, doesn’t it sound more appealing and exciting to be “healthy, wealthy and wise?” Do you currently have a self-limiting, scarcity mindset? Or do you have one of abundance and well-being – which is what represents true wealth?
Whatever your dream, we hope you will actively pursue it. And we would love to help you as you strive to live your best possible life – as you work on living your dream life.
Making Home Where the Healthy Hearth Is
Currently, we live off-grid on 50 acres of previously uninhabited property which borders tribal lands. We really do have a home where the buffalo roam. Our 360-degree unobstructed views include 5 mountain ranges. There isn’t a power pole or utility line in sight.
We watch weather systems approach from great distances; the stars are breathtaking. We are much more mindful of the rising and setting of the sun and the phases of the moon. People ask us if it is quiet up here. “No,” we smile. “It’s not quiet; it’s silent.”
Well, except for the serenading owls in the early morning, the yips and calls of coyotes in the evening and the seasonal howling winds and crashing cymbals of thunder. We have lots of different birds – both regulars and passing visitors, and many of the bird photos in my books were taken on our land. We’re also now on our fourth generation of Western Bluebird babies in our Nesting Boxes.
The move was primarily about the land. Our home is small with solar-powered electricity and a back-up gas generator. We put in a septic system and had a well drilled. Gratefully we have an ample supply of clean, fresh water for our home, gardens, livestock and bird baths. Our sole source of heat is a highly efficient, environmentally-friendly wood stove. We burn an average of 2.5 cords of wood a year.
This is a physically demanding and invigorating life that requires a certain level of strength and endurance. As baby-boomers we are motivated and inspired to become as fit and healthy as we can be in order to live life more fully.
Change & Renewal
We both have overcome significant medical diagnoses and health challenges and we’ve never been happier, healthier or more inspired. Today, we are in excellent health, pain-free and take no prescription medications.
The human body is remarkable. It is designed and created to be regenerative. We replace all of our cells and renew our organs regularly. We are able to create new neural pathways in our brain. Modern science confirms that when we have a positive mindset, exercise, reduce our stress and improve our diet we can change our body composition, overall health and fitness well into old age.
The Heart of the Matter
We have free will and the ability to choose. Change is always possible. Even though we may not be able to change everything, we can change some things. We can transform our lives by the renewing of our mind. And we can do difficult things when those things are meaningful and important enough to us. Every worthwhile change takes work and can pay tremendous dividends. We all have the capacity for discipline if we will develop it. As Napoleon Hill said,
“Do not wait: the time will never be ‘just right.’ Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command and better tools will be found as you go along.”
One of the reasons we are committed to this blog is because we know the importance of making just one decision, and taking one step and then another. Everyone gets stuck at different points along the way, and we all have opportunities which we can either side-step or embrace.
Please know that it’s also OK to outgrow others, and to move forward with your own personal growth and development. Not everyone will understand, or want to join you. Graciously accept that. And them. It is not their journey, it’s yours.
In recognizing the potential motivation of being in a desperate state, as well as the transformative power that being inspired can have, we choose and advocate inspiration. Jim Rohn puts it beautifully:
“We generally change ourselves for one of two reasons: inspiration or desperation.”
Our hope is to inspire and encourage you. And we’re here for you – because your healthier lifestyle matters.
