Instant Pot is the number one selling brand of programmable electric pressure cookers on Amazon at the time of this writing with good reason. They have several well-designed models, great marketing and there are a lot of accessories as well cookbooks available. For example, all components that come into contact with food are food grade 304 (18/8) stainless steel including the lid, the inner pot with a 3-ply bottom and steam rack with handles. Although the updated instruction manual is still not very easy to decipher, with the Instant Pot brand, it’s easy to find recipes and videos all over the internet.
Programmable pressure cookers are often referred to as multi cookers. The Instant Pot Duo Plus 8 quart 9-1 programmable pressure cooker will function as a slow cooker, rice cooker, yogurt maker, egg cooker, steamer, warmer, and sterilizer. You can even use the saute function to brown foods in it.

Instant Pot DUO Plus 8 Qt 9-in-1 Multi-Use Programmable Pressure Cooker
Instant Pot Duo Plus offers 3 features that their previous models did not. A cake setting for soft cakes, an egg setting for perfect eggs every time, and a sterilize setting that will pasteurize milk and sterilize. No more waiting for a large pot of water to boil or handling hot baby bottles and jars that drip all over the kitchen. And an Alexa guided cooking app includes 300+ recipes, getting started videos, favorite recipe list, personalized grocery list and more.
Dual Pressure Settings Reduce Cooking Time and Help You Create Better Food
The Instant Pot Duo Plus comes with 2 pressure settings, high and low. Cooking with high pressure reduces cooking time by up to 70% as compared to traditional cooking methods and the low pressure helps you avoid overcooking delicate foods. A “pressure cook” button allows you to set both the time and the pressure setting.
15 microprocessor controlled programs take the guess-work out of your cooking. Designed to press 1 button and go, these are Soup/Broth, Meat/Stew, Bean/Chili, Cake, Egg, Slow Cook, Sauté/Searing, Rice, Multigrain, Porridge, Steam, Sterilize, Yogurt, Keep Warm, and Pressure Cook. A slow cooked stew that would usually take 3-4 hours can be done in an hour. Many reviewers noted that they put food into the cooker right out of the freezer and it turned out beautifully. The cooking pot distributes heat well, so the food cooks evenly.
Like traditional cooking methods, there is prep time when cooking in a programmable pressure cooker. This includes not only prepping the food (seasoning, chopping, etc) but also bringing the cooker up to pressure. Instant Pot Duo Plus is among the quickest to achieve pressure. Some reviews noted that the time for pressurizing was in the 15-minute range. This is quite a bit less than several other models.
Instant Pot Duo Plus Gives You More Control
Instant Pot has designed their newest model with some features that really give you more control during the cooking process. First, the Large Blue LCD Display makes it easier to see how the cooker is progressing. The Status Icons help you control the cooking process. These are: Heat, Pressure Cook, Keep Warm and Sound. You can also do timed cooking with Delay Start.
You can make adjustments to the settings once the cooking process has started, such as cooking time, pressure levels or keep warm. In addition, you can toggle between ‘Less’, ‘Normal’ and ‘More’. For example, if you are using the Saute function, you can change the heat settings from Less to More without hitting cancel. These features allow you to adjust the cooking process and also cook more complicated dishes than other models.
Instant Pot Duo Plus Design Features Are Better Than Most
As a southpaw, one of my favorite features is Lid holders on both sides of the pot. You don’t have to put the lid upside down on the counter, and having two positions is convenient for both right and left-handers.
The cooking pot, steam rack, and lid are all stainless steel. This means that there are no chemical coatings on any of the food contact surfaces to leach into your food. You can feel great about cooking good healthy food in this cooker.
Safety Features Offer Peace of Mind
The new programmable pressure cookers are not the scary top of the stove models that you’ve heard nightmare stories about blowing up. For one thing, electric pressure cookers never reach the high-pressure settings of stovetop varieties, so they are safer overall. The Instant Pot Duo Plus is perfectly safe. It is UL certified, energy efficient, with 10 proven safety mechanisms that provide you with peace of mind. So you can look forward to convenient, safe and delicious cooking.
Instant Pot Duo Plus Is Easy to Clean
The stainless pot and steam rack can be put right into the dishwasher. The lid is easy to wash and dry. Small parts like the pressure valve and rubber ring come apart so that you can clean them thoroughly. The beautiful brushed stainless steel exterior stays fingerprint free. And there are fill markings at 1/2 and 2/3 keep you from overfilling the cooking pot and making a giant mess – like I frequently do!
The Instant Pot Duo Plus Saves Space in Your Kitchen
It’s 9 cooking functions can replace several other appliances. You can get rid of your crock pot, rice cooker, and yogurt maker just to name a few. In addition, you will find that the slim design fits easily into your cupboard.
Here are a few relatively minor things that reviewers noted could be improved:
- This product is made in China and there did seem to be some quality control concerns.
- Even with all of the safety features, some reviewers found that the lid leaked steam. In some cases, this was due to a faulty ring. You always want to make sure that the lid is properly secured before cooking.
- The rubber gasket is prone to retain cooking odors. To solve this problem, many customers purchased a second ring, one for sweet and one for savory. Others put the ring in the oven at 200 for 10 minutes. I don’t know how well that works or if it is sanctioned by the manufacturer.
- The electric cord does not detach from the base. Even though you would never submerge the cooking base, a detachable cord makes storing and handling the base easier.
- The instruction manual is a bit sketchy, hard to understand and there weren’t basic recipes. However, with this model, the book has been updated and is significantly improved. And as I noted earlier, there are many sources of information on the Internet.
What You Get
The package includes the cooker base, the lid, a UL-compliant power cable, a stainless steel inner pot and a set of accessories including a spatula, rice paddle, condensation container, measuring cup and stainless steel steam rack.
Overall, this is a great unit for beginners and experienced cooks alike. This super-safe electric pressure cooker has many features that give you more control over your cooking, is convenient to use and store, and it’s easy to clean. You may find, as I did, that I was eager to try lots of new recipes. Given Instant Pot’s popularity, new recipes and accessories will continue to be developed and shared widely.
For those looking for a small pressure cooker, the Instant Pot Duo Plus is also available in 6-quart and 3-quart models.
